Tricks to teach your baby to talk

Affection is the spark that ignites the first linguistic exchange that occurs between the baby and its mother. It develops day by day in everyday situations and during food and hygiene care that the baby needs for its development.

When we interact with our babies, we find that, as they mature, they become more and more social beings and that they communicate long before they master the complex rules of language. They are able to tune in to the adult holding them and respond accordingly.

This bond between mother and baby plays a fundamental role in the cognitive development of the newborn and it is essential to establish the first foundations of the pre-verbal communication. This first initial communication is established thanks to the intimate emotional exchange that takes place during the initial situations of biological care and ensures the child's social-emotional integration.

In all communication, at least two people interact, although in this case, one of them is a baby. To help your child develop his language, you need to:

1. Want to connect with your baby: we must come face to face with him to show him that we are interested in everything he says or does.

2. Interpret your actions as if you are trying to communicate something: It is convenient to try to guess what the baby is telling us, even if at first we are not sure if we were correct.

3. Finding the right moment or situation to have that dialogue: It will be easier if we have the baby's collaboration and we do it when he is rested and active. Take advantage of everyday hygiene situations, small family rituals and, above all, play.

4. Wait for any reaction of the child to respond to it.

5. Listen to any vocal production to imitate it, thus encouraging them to do or say it again.

6. Play to promote the development of communication: playful activities are an ideal resource to develop your baby's language. Play is a pleasant activity with which children discover the world, the qualities of objects (soft, hard, cold, warm ...) and the rules that govern their little universe. Playing we also seek to repeat over and over again, we display all kinds of skills and promote understanding of the situation.

The games that most connect young children with adults are peeking, tickling, wheelies or lullabies. Later on they will begin to connect with the toys that we offer them, although anything can help us to play with it: a piece of paper that breaks, a blanket that hides us from their view and then appears or the water that comes out of the tap. Everyday space, which for adults does not contain surprises, becomes a world of wonders for children to explore.

7. Arouse your interest: counting on their attention and participation from the beginning depends on you, you and your skills as interlocutors. To maintain the baby's interest and trust in the person you are talking to, it is important to give them time to respond and to use their skills in play.

8. Respect shifts: Although the baby does not know how to speak yet, his interventions are marked by a gesture, a look or a smile. If in all communication, one speaks and the other listens, and then the turns are reversed, we must wait for the baby to intervene to let him know that we are interested in what he wants to share and that we will respond later.
